The Watchers in the Rocks By Tony Brown

The story is set in Shaldon and Teignmouth during Regatta week.

A terrified boy hides a strange key under James' dinghy before drowning, pursued by angry unearthly seagulls. The key which has immense powers, releases its startling secrets slowly.

James and his friends - Mugsy and Geraldine- discover that humanity has been imprisoned on Earth for tens of thousands of years by the Guardians. Using their advanced technology they periodically destroy Earth's great civilisations whenever it poses a threat to their own power on a far off world.

As the friends realise that Earth's technology has almost caught up with that of their captors and they can at last break free, they unearth a chilling surprise.
